Explanation/Instructions

This A/B test is meant to judge the accuracy of two different methods of collecting a general location of your computer without requiring any input or interruption from the user. This is done using some combination of IP lookup, Google Maps GeoCoding and just regular old mathematics.

This is not meant to return pinpoint accuracy as it's purpose will only be used to either show distances to other cities/countries from the user, or to order a national or global event list by proximity to the user, or some similar general distance type calculation.

Being that location is caluclated from your IP address there may be some very wild discrepancies depending on your internet service provider, cell phone provider, etc.

Upon landing on this page the two methods below will try to gather a general location from your IP address and show it to you. When you input a destination you wish to know the distance to it will try to pinpoint your location a little more specifically, or at least more detailed, and show you the distance to your "destination". You can view any other details about the process by opening up the details sections.

The easiest way to test the accuracy of either method would be to input your actual current location in the destination field and get the distance, that way my code will tell you the distance between where it thinks you are and where you actually are. Not to worry, nothing on this page is stored except for vote counts.
